Tis the season for pumpkin spice!

We all have someone in our lives that loves August 24th. Why, you ask? Well, it’s the release of Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes, of course[1]!

Ah pumpkin, it tastes good, smells divine, reminds us of mom’s home cooking, and gets us excited for a SpOoKy HaLloWeEn!! But what if we told you that pumpkin is great for your pets too?

Why use pumpkin in my pet’s diet?

Pumpkin is an incredible source of fibre for your furry friend, and it contains amazing antioxidants[2] and gives a nutritional boost to any meal. Pumpkin is rich in vitamins A, E, and C, as well as potassium and iron. Not only is it an excellent nutritional snack for your little buddy, but it helps with digestion too[3]! Does Fido have an upset tummy? Pumpkin. Fefe isn’t pooping? Pumpkin*.

Did you know that pumpkin can also act as a natural remedy for worms and parasites? It’s true! Pumpkin seeds contain the amino acid Cucurbitin. Cucurbitin can actually paralyze and eliminate parasites from your pet’s digestive system[4].

Does the kind of pumpkin matter?

Yes! It is important to note that while adding pumpkin to your pet’s diet is an excellent health-conscious activity, it is important to provide your pet with the right kinds of pumpkin sources. Canned pumpkin must be 100% pure puree, not the type that is pumpkin pie filling. This is important because some brands use a deadly sweetener called Xylitol[5]. OK, for humans, but it can quickly kill our furry friends if they get into it. Another option is to purchase foods and treats formulated explicitly for pets! These specific lines have pumpkin added to their recipes to give your pet an extra boost of nutrition without overdoing it.

How much pumpkin should I be adding?

The Merck Veterinary manual suggests that 1-4 tbsp a meal can aid in assisting animals suffering from constipation, and in some instances, it can also help to firm up loose stools[6]. The Patton Veterinary Hospital in York notes that pumpkin supplements may also assist with weight loss and be beneficial for those animals that struggle to empty their anal glands independently[7].
